Banking Without a Utility Bill as a Van Lifer
If you live in a van, you do not have a gas bill, an electricity bill, or a council tax statement. That makes it hard to open a bank account, get a credit card, or prove your address. Here is how to do it.
The Problem
UK banks require proof of address to open a current account. The standard options are a utility bill (gas, electric, water), a council tax bill, or a bank statement from another account. None of these help if you live in a van full-time and do not have a bricks-and-mortar address. But there are solutions.
Digital Banks (No Proof of Address Required)
Monzo
Monzo is the best option for van lifers. They accept a wider range of documents than high street banks. For the basic account, you can use a valid passport or driving licence as sole ID. The app asks for a "residential address" but does not require a utility bill to verify it in most cases. Verification: Upload a photo of your passport or driving licence. Take a selfie. Monzo may ask for proof of address if the automated check fails (rare). The basic account is free. Overdraft available (subject to credit check). Why Monzo works: The Monzo card is accepted everywhere. The app shows spending by category (useful for budgeting van life expenses). The "pots" feature lets you save for van insurance, MOT, and fuel separately.
Starling Bank
Starling also has a streamlined verification process. Open the app, upload your ID, take a video selfie. Most accounts are opened without a utility bill. Why Starling works: No monthly fees. Good app. The card works with Google Pay and Apple Pay. Starling is slightly more conservative than Monzo — if the automated check fails, a human reviewer may ask for a bill.
Revolut
Revolut is an e-money account, not a full UK bank account (it is a Lithuanian e-money institution). Opening an account takes 5 minutes with a passport. No proof of address at all. Why Revolut works: It is the easiest account to open. But it is not FSCS protected (you are covered by the Lithuanian deposit scheme up to €100,000). It is fine for everyday spending but not for savings.
High Street Banks (Alternative Proof)
Some high street banks accept alternative proof of address:
- A letter from a hostel or campsite confirming your stay (Lloyds has accepted this)
- A letter from an employer on company letterhead (Barclays accepts this)
- A letter from a GP or hospital (Santander accepts this)
- A tenancy agreement for a room you rent (even if you only stay there 1 night a week)
- A DBS check certificate (accepted by Nationwide) The strategy: Walk into a branch with your passport and any of the above documents. If they refuse, try the next branch. The rules are applied inconsistently.
Using a Family Address
The most common solution: use a parents, sibling, or friends address as your correspondence address. You do not need to live there. You just need the mail to arrive. How to do it:
- Ask the person if they are OK with it (important — banks send physical letters)
- Change your address on your driving licence to that address (free, online via DVLA)
- Use the same address for your bank account
- Use the driving licence as ID — it shows the address you just registered Legality: This is perfectly legal as long as you have permission to use the address. You are not committing fraud — you are simply using a correspondence address. Many van lifers do this.
The Other Documents You Need
Once you have a bank account, other things become easier:
| Need | Document | How to Get It |
|---|---|---|
| Driving licence | Photo card + address | DVLA online, free |
| Van insurance | Address | Use your bank address or family address |
| MOT reminder | Address | DVLA uses your licence address |
| Amazon delivery | Address | Amazon Locker (free, any town) |
| GP registration | Address | Use a family address or hostel address |
Amazon Lockers for Van Lifers
If you use a family address for bank accounts but want deliveries on the road, Amazon Lockers are the solution. Over 5,000 locations in the UK (Co-ops, train stations, petrol stations). You select the locker at checkout, Amazon sends a code, you collect your parcel within 3 days. Free for Prime members.
Verdict
Open a Monzo account (no proof of address needed in most cases) and use a family address for your driving licence and van insurance. Use Amazon Lockers for deliveries on the road. The system is designed for people with fixed addresses — but with these workarounds, van lifers can access all the same services.
