Recommended: Sea to Summit Alpha
This is the best balance of weight, durability, and comfort. The stainless steel is thick enough to cut a steak without bending. The set clips together (no rattling in the drawer). The spoon is deep enough for soup. It is expensive for a piece of cutlery (£18) but it will last 10+ years.
Budget Option: GSI Outdoors Cascadian
Same design as the Sea to Summit but lower grade stainless. It bends under heavy use (trying to cut a tough piece of meat) but is fine for everyday van meals. £10 for a set.
Why Not Titanium?
Titanium sporks are popular with hikers but frustrating for van life. The spoon part is too shallow for soup. The fork tines are too short for pasta. The edges are sharp on some. A good backup for hiking, but not great as daily cutlery.
What About Reusable Plastic?
Recycled plastic cutlery (from takeaway packaging) works fine. It is free, lightweight, and replaceable. It snaps eventually but costs nothing to replace. Not great for cutting steak or spreading butter but fine for pasta, rice, and salad.
The "Dishwasher Safe" Factor
In a van, you wash by hand. Titanium and stainless are easy to clean. Wooden handles (Opinel) need occasional oiling. Plastic absorbs grease. The Sea to Summit Alpha set is the easiest to clean — the brushed finish does not show water spots.
My Setup
GSI Cascadian set for everyday. Light My Fire spork as a backup. Total: £22 for two sets, lasts 3+ years per set.
Verdict
Sea to Summit Alpha if you want the best. GSI Cascadian if you want good value. Skip the plastic sets — they break and bend. Keep one set per person, no more. Cutlery takes up space.
