Best Ear Plugs for Snoring & Noise in Vans
A campervan is a tiny space. If your partner snores, or you are near a road, ear plugs are essential for survival. Here are the best options.
Why Van Sleep Is Noisy
- The van amplifies snoring (small space, hard surfaces)
- Traffic noise from laybys and services
- Wind noise on the roof
- The diesel heater fan cycling on and off
- Birds at 5am
- Your partner breathing loudly when you are 60cm apart
The Options
| Ear Plug | Type | NRR (Noise Reduction) | Price | Reusable | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moldex Pura-Fit | Foam | 33dB | £8/50 pairs | No | Maximum noise reduction |
| Quies Wax | Wax | 25dB | £4/10 pairs | No | Comfort, moulds to ear |
| Loop Quiet | Silicone (semi-rigid) | 27dB | £15 | Yes | Reusable, comfortable |
| Flents Quiet Contours | Silicone putty | 22dB | £6/8 pairs | No | Swimmers, comfortable |
| Custom moulded (Snore Shop) | Acrylic | 30dB | £60 | Yes (3 years) | Best fit, most expensive |
Recommended: Moldex Pura-Fit
The gold standard foam ear plug. NRR 33dB is the highest available — they block almost all noise. They are disposable (use a pair for 3-5 nights). The tapered shape fits most ear canals. Roll them into a thin cylinder, insert, and they expand to fill the canal. For snoring: Moldex Pura-Fit will block a snoring partner at 60cm. You will still feel the vibration of the van if someone knocks on it, but the snoring is gone. Downside: They are foam — they dry out your ear canal after a few nights. Use a drop of olive oil or buy the Moldex lubricated version.
Best for Comfort: Quies Wax
If foam ear plugs hurt your ears, try wax. Quies are soft ear plugs that mould to your ear shape. They are less isolating (25dB) but more comfortable for side sleepers. The wax warms up and conforms to your ear. Van tip: Wax plugs are better for cold nights — they do not harden like foam in cold temperatures.
Loop Quiet
Loop ear plugs are reusable silicone plugs with a semi-rigid core. They are comfortable for side sleeping (the loop sits flush with your ear). They come with four sizes of silicone tips. The 27dB noise reduction is good enough for snoring. Best for: Van lifers who want one pair for months. They come with a carry case that clips to your keys.
Custom Moulded
A dental technician makes a mould of your ear canal and creates a silicone plug. The fit is perfect. The noise reduction is 30dB. They last 3+ years. The cost is £60-100. Best for: Full-time van lifers who cannot sleep without ear plugs. The investment pays off after 6 months.
What Not to Use
- Buds: Apple AirPods or similar. They fall out during sleep and run out of battery.
- Cheap foam from Boots (£1.50): Low NRR (18-22dB), uncomfortable, fall out.
- Noise-cancelling headphones: Uncomfortable for side sleepers. The headband pushes into the pillow.
Partner Communication
If you use ear plugs every night, establish a system: a tap on the shoulder to get attention, a torch flash for emergencies. Agree that "I cannot hear you" does not mean "I am ignoring you."
Verdict
Moldex Pura-Fit (£8 for 50 pairs = 16p per night) is the best value and most effective solution. If foam hurts your ears, Quies wax (£4). For permanent van life, custom moulded plugs (£60) are the best investment.
