Brecon Beacons Dark Skies: Van Life Stargazing Guide
The Brecon Beacons National Park was designated Wales's first International Dark Sky Reserve in 2013. With minimal light pollution and vast upland areas, it is one of the best places in the UK for stargazing from your campervan.
Best Stargazing Spots
1. Usk Reservoir: One of the darkest spots. Limited parking for 6-8 vans. Dylife and direction signs on minor roads. The sky here is Bortle Class 3 (rural sky). 2. Llyn y Fan Fach: Beautiful lake at the foot of the Black Mountain. Small layby at the base. The 3-mile walk up is worth it for the complete darkness. 3. Gospel Pass: Highest public road in Wales at 548m. Park in the small pull-in near the summit. Incredible panoramic views of the night sky. 4. Craig Cerrig-gleisiad: National Nature Reserve with a dedicated stargazing platform. Small car park, good for wheelchair access.
When to Visit
- New moon phase (darkest skies)
