Dorset Chesil Beach Campervan Guide
Chesil Beach is an 18-mile shingle beach on the Dorset coast, part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. It is one of the most dramatic coastal features in the UK.
Where to Park
- Portland Beach Road: The main car park at the southern end. £5/day. 2.1m height barrier. Toilets and café. No overnight.
- Chesil Beach Visitor Centre (Portland): Large car park, £4/day. Height barrier. No overnight. Great views.
- Fleet Lagoon (West Bexington): Free roadside parking along the B3157. No barrier. Overnight tolerated in some sections.
- Burton Bradstock: The Hive Beach car park. £4/day. Height barrier. Café (famous for fish and chips). No overnight.
- Cogden Beach (near Burton Bradstock): Free roadside parking. Quiet. Overnight possible in the outer laybys.
Overnight Parking
The best overnight option is roadside parking along the B3157 between Abbotsbury and West Bexington. This road runs parallel to Chesil Beach for 5 miles. There are several wide gravel laybys with direct access to the beach. No restrictions. Quiet at night. The Abbotsbury end is quieter than the Portland end. Park near the Fleet Lagoon for sunrise views over the water.
What to Do
- Walk the beach: The full length is 18 miles (Portland to West Bay). The pebbles make a distinctive noise as the waves pull them. The shingle varies in size from pea-sized at Portland to potato-sized at West Bay.
- Swim: The sea here is cold and has strong currents. Swim at West Bexington or Burton Bradstock where there are lifeguards in summer. Do not swim off Portland — the tides are dangerous.
- Fossil hunting: The cliffs at the western end (near West Bay) are Jurassic. Fossilised ammonites and belemnites are common after storms.
- Birdwatching: The Fleet Lagoon is a nature reserve. Terns, oystercatchers, and little egrets. In winter: brent geese and waders.
Amenities
- Portland: Tesco, Co-op, fuel, hospital. 10 minutes from the beach.
- Abbotsbury: The Ilchester Arms pub (van-friendly car park). Abbotsbury Swannery (famous, worth a visit).
- West Bexington: The Bear pub (good food, dog-friendly, van parking).
- Burton Bradstock: The Hive Beach Café (excellent seafood, queues at peak times).
When to Go
April-June and September-October are best. Summer weekends are busy — the Hive car park fills by 10am. Winter is very quiet. The beach is dramatic in storms (but stay off the sea wall).
Van Life Tips
- The B3157 is narrow in places — fine for SWB Transit. LWB vans will find tight passes near Abbotsbury.
- The wind is strong on the beach. A windbreak is essential for a day on the shingle.
- The pebbles are uncomfortable to sit on. Bring a camping chair or a thick mat.
- No fresh water on the beach — fill up at Portland or Abbotsbury before arriving.
