Eco-Friendly Toilet Fluids for Campervans
Standard blue toilet fluid contains formaldehyde — a carcinogen that kills septic tanks and harms aquatic life. Here are eco-friendly alternatives that work.
The Problem with Blue Fluid
The blue liquid in most caravan toilet chemicals is formaldehyde-based. It kills bacteria (good for smell control), but:
- It is toxic to aquatic life (one cassette emptied into a river kills everything for 100m downstream)
- Approved disposal sites (Elsan points) are the only legal disposal method
- It can damage septic tanks and sewage treatment systems
- The blue dye stains toilet bowls and clothing

How Eco Fluids Work
Eco-friendly fluids use enzymes or biological cultures to break down waste, rather than killing all bacteria with formaldehyde. They control smell by digesting the waste, not by masking it. The trade-off: they work less well in hot weather (the enzymes break down above 30°C) and need more frequent emptying (every 2-3 days vs 4-5 days for blue fluid).
Recommended: Thetford C260
This is the best eco-friendly option. It is formaldehyde-free, phosphate-free, and biodegradable. It controls smell as well as the standard blue fluid in most conditions. It costs slightly more (£7/L vs £5/L for blue) but the environmental benefit is significant.
DIY Options
A 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water in the flush tank. In the waste tank: a tablespoon of biological washing powder (contains enzymes) + water. This works well for smell control but does not break down solids as effectively as commercial products.
Disposal
Eco-friendly or not, you must still empty at a designated disposal point. Do not empty into rivers, streams, or roadside drains. Elsan points accept all cassette contents regardless of chemical type.
Verdict
Switch to Thetford C260 or Elsan Organic. They cost a few pounds more per month but are significantly better for the environment. In 12 months of using C260, I have had no smell issues and no blockages.
