Fire Blankets for Campervan Kitchens
Every campervan kitchen should have a fire blanket. They are better than fire extinguishers for cooking oil fires.
Why a Fire Blanket
Cooking oil fires (Class F) are the most common kitchen fire. Water makes them explode. Powder extinguishers make a mess. A fire blanket smothers the fire instantly.
How to Use One
- Pull the tabs to release the blanket
- Hold the blanket in front of you (hands protected by the folded edge)
- Place the blanket over the fire, covering it completely
- Turn off the heat source
- Leave the blanket in place until the pan cools (at least 30 minutes)
Where to Mount It
Mount the blanket near the kitchen area but not directly above the hob (you cannot reach it if the hob is on fire). A good spot: on the wall between the kitchen and the exit door.
Best Fire Blankets
| Blanket | Size | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Firechief Standard | 1.2m x 1.8m | £12 |
| First Alert | 1m x 1m | £10 |
| Lifesaver | 1.2m x 1.2m | £8 |
Additional: Smoke Alarm
Fit a smoke alarm with a CO detector in the kitchen area. A dual-sensor alarm (£15) covers both smoke and carbon monoxide (from gas appliances).
