Gas Drop-Out Vents UK Law
Gas drop-out vents are a safety requirement for any campervan with a gas installation. They allow LPG (which is heavier than air) to escape the gas locker.
The Law
Under UK regulations (BS EN 1949:2011 and the Caravan Standards), any gas locker that contains LPG cylinders must have a drop-out vent in the BOTTOM of the locker, venting to the outside of the vehicle.
Requirements
- Vent must be at the lowest point of the gas locker
- Minimum cross-sectional area: 2cm² per kg of gas stored
- Typical: 10-20cm² total for a 6-11kg cylinder
- Must vent directly to the outside (not into the van body)
- Must not be obstructed by the gas cylinder
Common Vent Types
- Plastic grille: Fitted into a hole in the gas locker floor. £5-10. Most common.
- Flocked vent: Plastic with a foam backing to prevent dust ingress. £8-12.
- Metal grille: Stronger but can corrode. £10-15.
DIY Installation
- Cut a hole in the gas locker floor (minimum 10cm²)
- Fit the vent grille from underneath
- Seal edges with Sikaflex
- Ensure the cylinder does not block the vent
Warning
If your van does not have a gas drop-out vent, your gas installation is not UK legal. Do not use gas appliances until one is fitted.
