Hidden Kill Switches for Vans
A hidden kill switch is one of the most effective anti-theft devices. It stops the engine from starting even if thieves have the keys.
How It Works
A kill switch interrupts the power supply to a critical component — typically the fuel pump or starter motor. When the switch is off, the engine cannot start. You flip it to on before you drive.
Types
- Fuel pump switch: Interrupts the 12v power to the fuel pump. Engine cranks but does not fire. Thieves assume a mechanical fault and give up.
- Starter motor switch: Interrupts the starter solenoid signal. Engine does not crank at all.
- Ignition switch: Interrupts the ignition power. More complex to wire.
Installation
- Identify the fuel pump relay or wire in the fuse box
- Cut the wire and run both ends to a hidden toggle switch
- Mount the toggle switch in a hidden location
- Test: switch off → engine should crank but not start
Best Hiding Places
- Under the driver's seat (reach down)
- Inside the glovebox (behind the back panel)
- In a cupboard (labeled as "water pump" or "lights")
- Behind a trim panel (reach through a small gap)
Cost
Parts: £5-15 (toggle switch, wire, connectors). Time: 1-2 hours. Cheapest security upgrade you can make.
Warning
Do NOT fit a kill switch to vehicles with modern CAN bus electronics without professional advice — you can damage the ECU.
