Leave No Trace UK Guide for Van Lifers
The UK countryside is under pressure from the explosion in campervan and motorhome travel. Every van lifer has a responsibility to leave no trace. Here is the practical guide.
Why Leave No Trace Matters
In 2022, National Parks in England and Wales saw a 40% increase in campervan visits compared to 2019. The result: overflowing litter bins, human waste on popular wild camping spots, and friction with local communities. In some areas (Skye, Dartmoor, the Lake District), this has led to overnight parking bans. The Leave No Trace principle is simple: take everything you brought with you when you leave. Leave the spot exactly as you found it — or better.
The 7 Principles for Van Lifers
1. Plan Ahead and Prepare
- Know the rules of the area you are visiting. Some National Trust car parks ban overnight parking. Some Forestry Commission roads allow it. Check on Park4Night or Searchforsites before you arrive.
- Carry a waste disposal kit: black bags, a trowel (for burying human waste if no toilet), and a portable toilet cassette.
- Fill your water tank before you arrive. Running a generator or engine to charge batteries disturbs the peace.
2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces
- Park on hardstanding (tarmac, gravel, concrete) not grass. A van on wet grass leaves tyre ruts that take months to recover.
- Do not drive across fields, moorland, or dunes to find a "better" spot. Stick to existing tracks and parking areas.
- In Scotland, the Land Reform (Scotland) Act 2003 gives you the right to camp on most unenclosed land, but you must camp on durable surfaces and avoid disturbing livestock.
3. Dispose of Waste Properly
- Toilet waste: Never empty a cassette toilet into a public toilet, a drain, or onto the ground. Use designated chemical disposal points (listed on campercontact.com). Most CAMC sites allow non-members to empty cassettes for £3-5.
- Grey water: Do not drain your sink into a layby. Grey water contains food scraps, soap, and oil. It attracts wasps and smells. Use a grey water container and empty it at a designated point.
- Litter: If the bin at a car park is full, take your rubbish with you. Overflowing bins are a sign that the council is struggling with van tourism.
4. Leave What You Find
- Do not cut branches to make a fire. Do not pick wildflowers. Do not move rocks.
- Do not leave "van life" souvenirs (painted rocks, cairns, message bottles). Leave the landscape natural.
5. Minimise Campfire Impacts
- Most of the UKs wild camping spots are too sensitive for campfires. The Scottish Outdoor Access Code allows campfires but says you should use a stove instead.
- If you must have a fire, use a fire pan or a portable fire pit (BioLite, £120) that keeps the fire off the ground.
- Never light a fire during a dry spell. In 2023, a campfire on Dartmoor spread and burned 40 hectares of heathland.
6. Respect Wildlife
- Do not feed deer, foxes, or birds from your van. Human food harms them and makes them dependent on people.
- Keep your dog on a lead near livestock. Farmers are within their rights to shoot a dog worrying sheep.
- Store food in sealed containers. A van that smells of bacon attracts foxes, badgers, and rats.
7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors
- Do not run a generator after 9pm or before 8am.
- Do not park in a way that blocks a gate, a passing place, or a view.
- If another van lifer asks you to move your awning or turn down your music, be polite.
The "Take 5" Rule
Before you leave any wild camping spot, spend 5 minutes walking the area picking up litter — even if it is not yours. This one habit has a massive impact. Other van lifers and locals notice and it builds goodwill for the community.
The UK-Specific Challenges
| Issue | Why It Matters | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Narrow roads | Vans damage verges pulling over | Use passing places, not verges |
| Public toilet closures | Fewer places to empty waste | Use a portable toilet, never the ground |
| Local resentment | NIMBYism against campervans | Be discreet, spend money locally |
| National Park rules | Varying restrictions | Check before you park |
Verdict
Leave No Trace is not optional. Every van lifer who leaves litter, empties a cassette illegally, or damages a verge makes it harder for the next person. Follow the 7 principles, carry waste bags, and spend 5 minutes picking up before you leave. The UKs wild places will stay open for van life if we all do our part.
