London Low Emission Zone for Vans
London has two types of emission zones. Understanding both is essential for van life.
LEZ (Low Emission Zone)
Covers most of Greater London (not just the centre). Applies to larger vehicles (including most campervans over 1.205 tonnes unladen weight).
- Daily charge: £100-200 for non-compliant vans
- Requirement: Euro 6 diesel (2016+) or Euro 4 petrol (2006+)
- Runs 24/7, 365 days
ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone)
Covers all London boroughs (expanded August 2023).
- Daily charge: £12.50
- Requirement: Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol
- Same boundaries as LEZ (basically all of London)
Checking Your Van
Use TfL's online checker (tfl.gov.uk/lez-checker). Enter your registration plate. It tells you if you need to pay.
Avoiding the Charge
- Park outside the zone (Loughton, Brent Cross) and take the Tube
- Some Park & Rides just outside the M25
- Register for Auto Pay (autopay.tfl.gov.uk) to avoid penalty notices
Penalties
Driving without paying: £160-1,000 depending on zone and vehicle type. The camera system is automated and comprehensive.
