Medication Storage in Van Fridges
Many medications require refrigeration (2-8°C). Keeping them at the right temperature in a campervan requires care.
Van Fridge Temperature Reality
Most 12v compressor fridges cycle between 2-8°C. That is technically within range for medications, but the temperature fluctuates more than a domestic fridge. Medications stored in the main compartment are fine.
Where in the Fridge?
- Store medications at the BACK of the fridge (most stable temperature)
- NOT in the door (door temperature fluctuates most)
- NOT right against the cooling plate (may freeze)
- Use a small mesh bag or box to keep them organised
Alternative: Battery-Powered Cooler
If your van fridge is unreliable, a dedicated USB-powered medicine cooler (Labcold Medibox or similar, £30-50) maintains a stable temperature and can run from a power bank overnight.
Insulin-Specific
Insulin can be stored at room temperature (up to 30°C) for 28 days once opened. If you use a vial within a month, refrigeration is not essential. Unopened insulin MUST be refrigerated.
Travel Without Fridge
If you have no fridge: use an insulated medicine travel wallet with an ice pack (£15-20). This keeps meds at 2-8°C for 6-12 hours. Replace the ice pack at shops or cafés.
Tip
Keep a fridge thermometer inside (£5). Check daily. If temperatures exceed 8°C for more than 4 hours, the medication may be compromised. Consult your pharmacist.
