Retro-Fitting Diesel Particulate Filters
A retro-fitted DPF can make an older diesel campervan compliant with ULEZ and Clean Air Zones — but it is not simple.
Does It Work?
Theoretically, yes. A certified retro-fit DPF can reduce NOx and particulate emissions to Euro 6 levels. The DPF must be certified by the Clean Vehicle Retrofit Accreditation Scheme (CVRAS) to be recognised by TfL and other CAZ authorities.
Cost
A CVRAS-certified retrofit costs £1,500-3,000 depending on the vehicle. This includes: DPF unit, fitting, NOx reduction system (AdBlue or SCR), and certification.
ULEZ Approval
If the retrofit is CVRAS-certified, TfL will update their database. Your van becomes ULEZ-compliant — no more daily charges. You must provide the certificate to TfL.
The Catch
Not every van can be retrofitted. The engine management system must support the DPF. Some older vans (pre-2005) have engines that cannot generate enough exhaust heat to regenerate the DPF.
Alternatives
- Sell your van and buy a Euro 6 model (£6-10k)
- Accept CAZ charges (£8-12.50 per day)
- Avoid CAZ cities entirely
Verdict
Retro-fitting a DPF costs £1,500-3,000. If your van is worth £8k+ and you frequently visit cities, it may be worth it. For older vans worth £3-5k, it is cheaper to buy a compliant one.
