UK Speed Limits for Campervans
Speed limits for campervans are NOT the same as cars. The limit depends on your van's weight and body type as recorded on the V5C. Getting it wrong can mean points and fines.
The Three Categories
1. Motor Caravan up to 3,050kg (car limits): Single carriageway 60mph, dual carriageway 70mph, motorway 70mph. 2. Motor Caravan 3,050-3,500kg (car + van limits): Single 50mph, dual 60mph, motorway 70mph. 3. Panel Van over 2 tonnes (van limits): Single 50mph, dual 60mph, motorway 70mph. But 60/70/70 if under 2t unladen.
Reclassification Effect
Reclassifying your panel van to Motor Caravan changes your speed limits. A typical DIY Transit conversion weighing 2,800kg with Motor Caravan on the V5C gets car limits (60/70/70). The same van as a Panel Van would be 50/60/70.
Downplating
If your Motor Caravan exceeds 3,050kg, you drop to 50/60/70. Downplating to under 3,050kg (if the van's GVW allows it) restores car limits.
Enforcement
Speed cameras cannot tell your weight. But police can stop you and check the V5C. If caught exceeding van limits, it is 3-6 points and £100 fine per offence.
Conclusion
Check your V5C body type. If it says Motor Caravan and your weight is under 3,050kg, you use car limits. Anything else, assume van limits.
