Thetford Forest Campervan Spots
Thetford Forest is 18,730 hectares of pine plantation in Norfolk and Suffolk. It is the largest lowland pine forest in Britain — and a surprisingly good van life destination.
Forestry England Parking
- High Lodge: The main visitor centre. Large car park, café, bike hire, Go Ape. Overnight parking is not allowed in the main car park but the nearby forest road laybys are fine.
- Brandon Country Park: Just outside the forest boundary. Free parking, toilets, café. No overnight signs though — day use only.
- Santon Downham: Small car park near the river. Quiet during the week. Some overnight van parking tolerated.
- Lynford Stag: Large parking area near Lynford Arboretum. No signs restricting overnight. Used by motorhomes on occasion.
Wild Camping in Thetford
Thetford has hundreds of kilometres of forest tracks. Wild camping is technically not allowed (Forestry England land requires a permit for overnight stays), but in practice:
- Permit option: Forestry England sells a "Stay the Night" permit for £15-25 for designated spots. Thetford has several — book online and get a grid reference.
- Forest tracks: Deep in the forest, away from main roads, you can find spots. Arrive after 7pm, leave before 9am. No fires (pine forests burn fast). Leave no trace.
- The Brecks: The area around Thetford is called the Brecks — a mix of forest and heathland. Plenty of quiet minor roads with passing places big enough for a van.
Best Laybys
- A1065 near Mundford: Wide gravel laybys, phone signal (EE and Three), quiet at night.
- B1107 near Brandon: Forest-edge laybys with good coverage.
- A134 near Thetford: Several large laybys used by truckers and vanners.
Things to Do
- Cycling: High Lodge has 15km of purpose-built mountain bike trails. Free parking if you arrive early.
- Walking: The Peddars Way and Norfolk Coast Path start near Thetford. The forest has the Brandon Heritage Trail (8km).
- Wildlife: Red squirrels (one of the few strongholds in England), nightjars, woodlarks.
- Dad's Army: The forest was used for training in WWII. There are still tank tracks and training structures visible.
Local Amenities
- Thetford town: Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Morrisons. 5 minutes from the forest. Full facilities.
- Brandon: Smaller, but has a Co-op, butcher, and a decent greengrocer.
- Water: Tap at Thetford services (A11) or ask at the High Lodge café.
When to Go
April-June and September-October are best. Summer weekends get busy with dog walkers and cyclists. Winter is very quiet — the forest is atmospheric in frost and fog.
