UK Drainage Laws for Campervans
Draining grey water (sink and shower waste) onto the ground is illegal in the UK. Here is what the law says.
The Law
The Environmental Protection Act 1990 makes it an offence to deposit waste water where it can cause pollution or harm. Pouring grey water onto a campsite pitch, into a hedge, or down a drain not designed for it is illegal.
Designated Disposal
Grey water must be disposed of at:
- Campsite chemical disposal points
- Motorhome service areas (Elsan points)
- Designated grey water drains
- A washroom sink (if you carry containers)
In Practice
- On a fully-serviced pitch with a drain: you can drain directly
- On a standard pitch: collect grey water in a container and take it to the disposal point
- Never drain onto the grass or gravel of your pitch
- Never drain into a surface water drain (they go directly to rivers)
Fines
Local authority enforcement officers can issue Fixed Penalty Notices of £50-150. In serious cases, prosecution can lead to unlimited fines.
Eco Tips
Use biodegradable soaps (Ecover, Bio-D). Even with biodegradable products, drain only at designated points. The volume of waste water from a van (20L+ per day) can overwhelm local ecosystems.
