UK Winter Sun Routes & Isles of Scilly
Winter van life does not mean shivering in Scotland. The UK has winter sun — you just go to the right places.
Where the Sun Is in Winter
The south-west of England (Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset) and the Isles of Scilly have the mildest winter weather in the UK. Average January temperatures: 7-10°C. Sunshine hours: 3-4 per day (vs 1-2 in Scotland). Frost: rare on the coast.
Route 1: The Cornish Winter Coast (7 days)
Start at Bude, finish at the Lizard. 120 miles.
- Day 1-2: Bude. Summerleaze Beach, the canal. Quiet in winter. Park at the Falcon Hotel car park (£5 overnight).
- Day 3-4: St Ives. The Tate, the beaches. The Porthminster car park is quiet in winter. Free parking after 6pm.
- Day 5-7: Penzance to the Lizard. The causeway to St Michael's Mount (walk at low tide). Lizard Point lighthouse. Park at the Lizard car park (free in winter).
Route 2: The South Devon Coast (5 days)
- Day 1-2: Salcombe. The most southerly town in Devon. Quiet in winter. Park at the Salcombe car park (£3/day). Walk to North Sands Beach.
- Day 3-4: Torquay. The English Riviera. Palm trees on the seafront. Park at the Marina car park (free in winter).
- Day 5: Dartmouth. The castle, the ferry, the pubs. The Dartmouth Park & Ride works for campervans.
The Isles of Scilly
The Scillies are the mildest place in the UK. January average: 8°C. They rarely get frost. Daffodils flower in December. The Scilly Isles are subtropical — palm trees and white sand beaches. Getting there: The Scillonian III ferry from Penzance (2h 45m). Campervans cannot go on the ferry. Park your van at Penzance (the Long Stay car park is £8/day or a Campsite in the area for £15-20/night). On the islands: No cars needed — St Mary's has a bus, and the other islands are walkable. Stay in a B&B (£50-80/night in winter) or bring a tent for camping in March-October.
Winter Sun Pro Tips
- Follow the coast: Inland frosts are common. Stay within 5 miles of the coast.
- South-facing cliffs: The south coast of Cornwall (Porthcurno, Lamorna, the Lizard) catches the winter sun. North coast (Bude, Polzeath) is shadier.
- Park facing south: Park with the side door facing the sun. In winter, every degree of warmth matters.
- Thermal curtains: Essential for winter van life. Reflect the warmth inside.
- Services: South West services are open year-round. Many coastal cafés close November-February. Cook in the van.
Best Winter Sun Spots
- Lamorna Cove (Cornwall) — sheltered, south-facing, beautiful winter light
- Porthcurno (Cornwall) — white sand, turquoise water, the Minack Theatre
- Slapton Sands (Devon) — long beach, south-facing, very quiet in winter
- Chesil Beach (Dorset) — dramatic winter sunsets
- St Michael's Mount (Cornwall) — causeway walks in winter sun
Verdict
Cornwall and Devon in January are not a tropical beach holiday. But they offer the best winter van life in the UK — quiet roads, empty beaches, temperatures of 8-12°C, and the occasional glorious winter sun day that reminds you why you chose van life.
