What You Actually Need for Van Life in 2026
There is a lot of gear marketed at van lifers. Most of it is unnecessary. This list covers what you actually need, organised by priority.
Sleeping (Priority 1)
A good night's sleep makes everything else easier. The minimum: a comfortable mattress (at least 10cm thick memory foam), a sleeping bag rated to 0°C or a duvet, and a pillow from your home bed (travel pillows are never as good). A mattress topper transforms a thin van mattress. Blackout blinds or window covers are essential for summer light and winter insulation.
Cooking (Priority 2)
A single-burner gas stove (£15-30 from Campingaz or Go Outdoors), one good non-stick frying pan with a lid, a sharp knife, a chopping board, and a bowl and mug. That is enough to cook proper meals. Add a kettle if you drink tea or coffee regularly.
Power (Priority 3)
A 100Ah lithium leisure battery, a DC-DC charger for charging while driving, and a solar panel (100-200W). For portable power, a 20,000mAh power bank charges a phone 4-5 times and costs about £25.
Organisation (Priority 4)
Clear plastic storage boxes for clothes and dry food. A hanging organiser for toiletries and small items. A laundry bag. Bungee cords and cargo nets for securing items while driving.
Emergency and Safety
A first aid kit, a CO alarm, a fire extinguisher, a torch, jump leads, and a tyre inflator. These are not optional. A breakdown cover policy (Green Flag, RAC, or AA) with campervan cover is strongly recommended.
What to Leave Behind
Single-use gadgets: dedicated toasters, slow cookers, Nutribullets, sandwich presses. If it only does one thing, it is not worth the space. Skip the camping chairs and table unless you spend a lot of time outside your van. Skip decorative items that serve no function.
Final Thoughts
Start with the essentials and buy things as you discover you need them. Most van lifers carry too much gear. The best gear setup is one where everything you own has a place and a purpose.
