The Legal Essentials for UK Van Life
This guide covers the basic legal requirements for owning, driving, and living in a campervan in the UK. For full details on specific topics, see the comprehensive guide.
Vehicle Requirements
MOT — Required annually for vehicles over 3 years old. A campervan conversion does not change the MOT requirement. Make sure seatbelts are fitted for all designated seats. Gas and electrical systems are not tested in a standard MOT.
Vehicle Tax (VED) — Payable annually. The rate depends on CO2 emissions and age. Most older vans fall in the £300-350 band. Reclassifying as a Motor Caravan with the DVLA can affect the rate.
Insurance — You need a specialist campervan policy, not a standard van policy. The policy must cover the conversion, your belongings, and lived-in status if applicable. See the comprehensive insurance guide for details.
V5C logbook — Keep your vehicle registration document up to date. You can reclassify a self-build from PLG (Private/Light Goods) to Motor Caravan by submitting a V70 form with photos. This is optional but recommended.
Parking Laws
- Double yellow lines — No parking at any time
- Single yellow line — No parking during controlled hours (check the sign)
- White lines — Free parking unless restricted by signage
- Red routes (London and some cities) — Strict no stopping
- Residents' parking zones — Usually permit holders only during certain hours
Sleeping in a legally parked vehicle is not itself illegal. The issue arises if you are "camping" (putting out chairs, awnings, etc.) in a place where it is not allowed, or if you stay in one spot for extended periods.
Living in Your Van
- You do not need to register a change of use to sleep in your van
- Cooking with gas is legal as long as the installation meets safety standards
- You must dispose of waste legally — grey water should go into designated waste points, not onto the ground
- TV Licence is required if you watch or record live TV, regardless of your home address
- Your registered address on the V5C must be a valid postal address where you can receive mail
Final Thoughts
The legal framework for UK van life is straightforward. Keep your vehicle properly registered, insured, and maintained. Park considerately following standard parking rules. Dispose of waste responsibly. The vast majority of legal issues van lifers encounter come from leaving litter, blocking access, or staying in one spot too long.
