Annual Checks
MOT
Your van needs an MOT test every year if over 3 years old. Book in advance — many garages have long waits.
Oil and Filter Change
Even if your oil doesn't look dirty, change it annually. Use the manufacturer-recommended grade.
Brake Fluid
Replace every 2 years regardless of mileage. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, reducing braking performance.
Coolant
Replace coolant every 2-3 years to prevent corrosion and maintain freezing protection.
Tyre Age
Tyres over 5 years old should be inspected more frequently, even with good tread.
UK-Specific Considerations
- Road salt: Causes rapid rust in winter. Wash undercarriage regularly in winter months
- MOT: Book early — garages fill up fast before March and September
- Insurance: Some insurers offer discounts for well-maintained vehicles
- AA/RAC: Breakdown cover is essential — many policies require regular maintenance
Record Keeping
Keep a maintenance log with dates, mileage, and work done. This helps when selling your van and proves you've maintained it properly.
