Van Life Minimals: Living Comfortably with Less
One of the greatest gifts of van life is learning to live with less. But minimalism doesn't mean deprivation — it means keeping only what truly serves you.
Why Minimalism Works in a Van
Space is the obvious constraint. A typical campervan has about 6-10 square metres of living space. Every item you own needs to justify its footprint. But there's a deeper reason minimalism works:
- Less cleaning — Fewer things means less tidying
- Lower costs — You buy less and maintain less
- More freedom — Lighter vans are more fuel-efficient and easier to drive
- Less mental clutter — Fewer possessions means fewer decisions about what to use
The Van Life Minimalism Framework
The One-Year Rule
If you haven't used something in 12 months, donate or sell it. Exceptions: emergency kit, winter gear, and tools.
The Multi-Use Test
Every item should serve at least two purposes. A good example:
- A sarong: beach towel, blanket, curtain, tablecloth, pillow cover
- A camping stove: cooking, heating water, warming the van
- A rucksack: day bag, shopping bag, laundry bag
The Weight Budget
Weigh your van fully loaded. Then remove 10% of what you carry. You'll be surprised how much you can live without.

The Psychological Benefits
Living with less isn't just practical — it's mentally liberating. You stop measuring your worth by possessions and start valuing experiences instead.
Many van lifers report that the process of downsizing is as rewarding as the van life itself. It teaches you what really matters.
Downsizing Tips
- Start early — don't wait until moving day
- Sell high-value items on eBay or Facebook Marketplace
- Donate to charity shops
- Store essential documents digitally
- Take photos of sentimental items before letting them go
- Keep a small memory box for truly irreplaceable items
Minimalism in van life is a skill that takes practice. Start with less than you think you need — you can always buy things on the road.
