Edinburgh Fringe Campervan Parking Guide
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August is the world's largest arts festival. Taking a campervan is the smart move — hotels cost £300/night. But parking is the challenge.
The Parking Problem
Edinburgh city centre during the Fringe is a no-go zone for campervans. The entire city centre is controlled parking zones, residents' only, or pay-and-display with 2-hour maximums. You cannot park overnight in the city centre. The solution: park on the outskirts and bus/tram in.
Park & Ride Options
Edinburgh has several Park & Ride sites on the ring road. These are the best options for van lifers.
| P&R | Bus Time | Tram? | Cost | Overnight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ingliston | 20 min (bus) | Tram to city centre | Free parking | No (no overnight) |
| Hermiston Gait | 15 min (bus) | No | Free | Rarely enforced overnight |
| Sheriffhall | 15 min (bus) | No | Free | No |
| Straiton | 15 min | Tram nearby | Free | Tolerated (retail park) |
| Newcraighall | 10 min (train) | No | Free | No |
| Best option: Hermiston Gait P&R. Free parking, 15-minute bus to Princes Street. Overnight parking is not officially allowed but is rarely enforced during the Fringe. Bus service runs until 1am during the festival. |
Other Options
- Edinburgh College of Art car park: £10/day during Fringe. Some overnight allowed. Book in advance.

Fringe Survival Tips
- Public transport: Lothian Buses run 24-hour services on key routes during Fringe. A day ticket is £5.
- Free shows: The Free Fringe has 100+ shows with no entry fee. You pay what you want at the end.
- Bring a power bank: Your phone battery dies fast (queueing, checking show times, using the app).
- Water: Fill up at the Park & Ride tap or the Cramond public tap.
- Laundry: There is a launderette on Buccleuch Street (near the Meadows). Open 8am-10pm.
What to See
Some Fringe recommendations for van lifers:
- The Stand Comedy Club — 10 shows a day, all affordable, most very good
- Forest Fringe — Experimental, alternative venue in the Forest Café
- The Meadows — Outdoor performances, buskers, street food. Free entry, bring a blanket
- Pleasance Courtyard — The biggest Fringe venue, great atmosphere
The Experience
The Fringe is 3,500+ shows across 300 venues. The city is electric for three weeks. A campervan gives you a place to sleep, cook, and escape the chaos. Just plan your parking before you arrive.
