Jurassic Coast Fossil Tour
The Jurassic Coast (UNESCO World Heritage Site) spans 95 miles from Exmouth to Studland. It is one of the world's best fossil hunting destinations.
Best Fossil Beaches
- Lyme Regis: The most famous. Monmouth Beach and Church Cliffs. Ammonites, belemnites, and ichthyosaur remains. Parking at Lyme Regis car park (£10/day).
- Charmouth: Beach below Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre. Best for beginners. Parking £8/day. Fossil identification service at the centre.
- Kimmeridge Bay: Fossil beds visible at low tide. Parking £6/day.
- Swanage: Studland Bay area. Parking £5-8/day.
Rules
- Collect loose fossils from the beach (NOT from cliffs — dangerous)
- Hammering into cliffs is not allowed
- Do not take more than a few small specimens
- Report major finds to the Heritage Coast Centre
When to Go
Winter storms erode cliffs and expose fresh fossils. Low tide is best. After a storm is prime time.
