Lake District Honister Pass
Honister Pass (B5289) links Borrowdale with Buttermere. At 357m, it is one of the Lake District's highest and most dramatic passes.
Driving
The pass is narrow with steep gradients (1:4 in places). Hairpin bends require care. Suitable for campervans up to 3m wide — larger motorhomes may struggle. Low gear going down (save your brakes). Passing places are frequent — use them.
Parking
Limited parking at the summit near Honister Slate Mine. Car park (£4 all day, including mine admission discount). Arrive before 10am in summer or you will not get a space.
Honister Slate Mine
The mine offers underground tours (£18) and the Via Ferrata — a cliffside climbing route with cables and ladders (£45). The cafe is good and reasonably priced for the Lakes.
Walks from the Pass
- Fleetwith Pike: 6km, 600m ascent. The classic Honister walk. Spectacular views of Buttermere.
- Haystacks: Wainwright's favourite fell. 8km, moderate. The summit has a small tarn.
- Dale Head: 5km, 500m ascent. Quiet ridge walk.
Alternative Route
If the pass is too daunting, the alternative is via Keswick (A66) and Newlands Pass — longer but wider roads.
Seasons
Open year-round. In winter, check for ice and snow. The pass can close in heavy snow. Summer and autumn are best.
