New Forest Van Life Guide
The New Forest is 220 square miles of ancient woodland, heathland, and wild ponies. It is one of the best national parks for van life in the UK — if you know the rules.
The Overnight Parking Conundrum
The New Forest is divided between the Forestry England (public) land and private estates. Overnight camping is NOT allowed on Forestry England car parks or open forest land. However:
- Forestry England Stay the Night: Four designated sites in the New Forest where you can park overnight. Black Knowl (near Brockenhurst), Holmsley (near Burley), and two others. £15-25 per night. Book online. Toilets, no hookup.
- CAMC sites: Two CAMC sites in the forest — Hill House (near Fordingbridge) and Holmsley. Full facilities, hookup. £20-30/night.
- Pub car parks: Several pubs allow overnight campervan parking. The Red Shoot (Linwood), The Green Dragon (Brockenhurst), The Oak Inn (Bank). Buy dinner, park overnight.
- Laybys: Some quiet forest road laybys tolerate overnight parking. Be discreet, arrive late, leave early. The B3054 and B3078 have wide verges.
Best Spots to Park
- Black Knowl: The best of the Stay the Night sites. Large, flat, set back from the road. Walking distance to Brockenhurst. £20/night.
- Red Shoot car park: Pubs owns it. Park for free if you eat at the pub. Good food, dog-friendly.
- Holmsley: Forest edge, near cycle trails. Quiet midweek.
- Wilverley Plain: Large Forestry England car park. Day use only but quiet overnight. Tolerated in winter.
Things to Do
- Cycling: The New Forest has 100 miles of gravel tracks. Bike hire in Brockenhurst (£20/day). The Ornamental Drive cycle route is beautiful.
- Walking: Knightwood Oak Trail (the forest's oldest oak), Burley to Rhinefield Ornamental Drive (5km), Lymington to Keyhaven salt marsh (coastal, seabirds).
- Ponies: The New Forest ponies roam freely. Do not feed them — they bite. Keep van doors closed when cooking (they have learned to open them).
Amenities
- Brockenhurst: Co-op, butcher, bakery, train station (London Waterloo 90 mins)
- Lymington: Waitrose, Tesco, independent shops, ferry to Isle of Wight
- Lyndhurst: New Forest Visitor Centre, toilets, fuel
- Water: Taps at Black Knowl and Holmsley Stay the Night sites. Otherwise, fill up at Brockenhurst or Lymington services.
Seasonal Notes
- Summer: Very busy. Parking fills by 10am. Book Stay the Night in advance. Midges in July.
- Winter: Quiet, atmospheric. Some forest car parks flood. The ponies are still out.
- Pannage season (autumn): Pigs roam the forest eating acorns. Roads are busy with sightseers.
Final Word
The New Forest is not a wild camping destination (too many rules). But with the Stay the Night sites and pub parking, it is one of the best van life zones in the South of England. Book ahead in summer.
