Best UK Mountain Biking Van Trails
A campervan is the ultimate mountain bike base camp. Park near the trailhead, ride all day, sleep in the car park. Here are the best UK mountain biking destinations for van lifers.
Top 10 Van-Friendly MTB Destinations
1. Coed y Brenin (North Wales)
The original UK trail centre. 4 colour-coded trails from 10km to 40km. The main car park is large, flat, and van-friendly. Overnight parking is tolerated (arrive late, leave early). Café, bike shop, and showers on site. No hookup but the Forestry England Stay the Night scheme recently added this location — £20/night.
2. Glentress (Scottish Borders)
Part of the 7stanes network. Glentress has the best trail centre facilities in Scotland. The main car park is massive with designated campervan bays. Overnight parking is actively allowed in the lower car park (£5/night, pay at the machine). The Spooky Wood trail is one of the UK's best blue runs.
3. BikePark Wales (Merthyr Tydfil)
The UK's best purpose-built bike park. 40+ trails from green to double black. The car park accepts campervans. Overnight parking for £10/night (book online). Showers and café on site. No hookup. The uplift service runs weekends and school holidays.
4. Dalby Forest (North Yorkshire)
Dalby has the UK's longest purpose-built mountain bike trail (24km red route). The main car park at Low Dalby is van-friendly. Overnight parking via Forestry England Stay the Night at the nearby Staindale Lake car park. Café and bike shop on site.
5. Hamsterley Forest (County Durham)
Underrated. The red route is 20km of flowing singletrack. The car park is large and usually quiet — overnight parking is tolerated. No café (bring your own food). Nearest services in Bishop Auckland (15 mins).
6. Cannock Chase (Staffordshire)
The Follow the Dog trail (red) and Monkey Trail (black) are 30 minutes from Birmingham. The Birches Valley car park is large. Overnight parking is not officially allowed but the Chase has several laybys that work for a quiet overnight.
7. Afan Forest Park (South Wales)
The Penhydd trail (red, 28km) is a classic. The visitor centre car park is van-friendly. Overnight parking tolerated. Café, bike shop, and bike wash. The W2 trail is one of the most technical in the UK.
8. Kirroughtree (Galloway, Scotland)
The 7stanes trail with the best scenery. The car park is small but quiet. Overnight parking possible. The Black Craigs trail has granite slabs and flowing singletrack through forests and loch views.
9. Lee Quarry (Lancashire)
Dog-friendly, open access, free. The car park is industrial (old quarry) but flat. Great for overnight parking. The trails are natural and technical. No facilities — you are on your own.
10. Aston Hill (Bucks/Oxon border)
Small but technical. Red and black trails. The car park is small — better for smaller vans. Overnight parking not recommended (busy commuter route). Day trip only from a nearby pub car park.
Essential MTB Van Gear
- Bike rack: Tailgate pad (for pickup conversions) or towball rack. Avoid boot-mounted racks — they block rear doors.
- Bike wash: A portable pressure washer (Ryobi 18V, £50) or just a bucket and brush. Keep the mud out of the van.
- Drying gear: A clothes airer and dehumidifier. Wet kit in a small van is grim.
- Lock: A decent D-lock for bikes left on the rack. Hiplok D1000 is the best.
Verdict
Glentress and BikePark Wales are the best for van life — they actively welcome campervan overnight parking. Coed y Brenin and Dalby are close behind. If you want wild riding, Hamsterley and Kirroughtree are quieter, free, and van-friendly.
