Carver Cascade Windows Review
Carver Cascade windows are one of the most popular aftermarket window options for UK campervan conversions. Made in the UK by Carver Engineering (part of the Carver Group), these acrylic windows are designed specifically for panel van conversions.
This review covers build quality, installation, thermal performance, and how they compare to alternatives like Movera and Dometic.
Product Range
Carver Cascade windows come in several styles:
| Model | Type | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Cascade Standard | Fixed or slider | Side panels |
| Cascade RPB | Radius corner, flush fit | Modern conversions |
| Cascade FL | Flat glass look | Budget builds |
| Cascade T/TL | Tall/Tall-Large | Long side panels |
Sizes: From 400x400mm to 900x600mm in 50mm increments. Custom sizes available at 20% premium.
Construction: Double-skinned acrylic (Plexiglass) with a UV-stabilised outer layer. The inner layer has a frosted finish on the edges to hide the sealant bead. Aluminium frame bonded to the acrylic.
Build Quality
Glass vs Acrylic: Carver uses 4mm acrylic (PMMA) for both inner and outer panes. Acrylic is lighter than glass (40% less weight) and does not shatter, but it scratches more easily.
Frame: The aluminium frame is powder-coated in white or black. The frame is bonded to the acrylic with structural adhesive, not just a gasket. This prevents water ingress between frame and pane.
Seals: EPDM rubber seals with a compression fit. Carver uses a multi-fin seal design that creates three separate water barriers.
Rating: 8/10 for build quality. The aluminium frame is robust and the acrylic does not yellow after 5+ years in UK sun.
Installation
Carver Cascade windows require a professional approach:
Method:
- Cut a hole in your van panel (template provided with the window)
- Deburr the cut edge and apply primer to bare metal
- Apply a 10mm bead of Sikaflex 512 or similar PU adhesive around the window frame
- Press the window into place from outside
- Secure with the internal clamping frame (screws into the window frame, sandwiching the van panel)
Installation difficulty: Medium. The clamping frame makes installation easier than bonded-only windows. You need a jigsaw with a fine metal blade, Sikaflex, and a friend to hold the window from outside.
Time: 1-2 hours per window including preparation.
Thermal Performance
| Property | Carver Cascade | Caravan Glass | Domestic Double Glazing |
|---|---|---|---|
| U-value | 2.8 W/m²K | 2.8-3.2 | 1.4-2.0 |
| Single acrylic | 5.0 W/m²K | -- | -- |
| Acoustic reduction | 28 dB | 25 dB | 35 dB |
The Cascade's double acrylic construction is thermally equivalent to a typical caravan double-glazed unit — adequate but not as good as domestic double glazing.
Condensation: In cold weather, condensation forms on the inner acrylic pane, not between the panes. The sealed cavity does not fog up.
Alternatives Comparison
| Feature | Carver Cascade | Movera | Dometic S4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material | Double acrylic | Double acrylic | Double acrylic |
| Frame | Aluminium | Aluminium | Aluminium |
| Opening | Slider or fixed | Slider or fixed | Slider, fixed, or top-hinged |
| Price (mid-size, ~700x500mm) | £120-160 | £140-200 | £150-200 |
| Warranty | 3 years | 5 years | 2 years |
| UK-made | Yes | No (German) | No (Swedish) |
| Availability | Good (direct + distributors) | Good (online) | Excellent (widespread) |
Carver win: Price. The Cascade is typically 15-30% cheaper than Movera or Dometic equivalents.
Movera win: Warranty (5 years vs 3) and slightly better seal design.
Durability
After 5 years of use in a UK conversion:
- Scratches: Some minor surface scratches from cleaning and tree branches. These polish out with acrylic polish (Meguiars PlastX).
- Seals: Still watertight. The EPDM rubber has not hardened.
- UV degradation: No yellowing. The UV stabiliser works effectively.
- Cracking: One customer report of a crack after a stone strike — acrylic is less impact-resistant than glass.
Durability rating: 7/10. Good for a well-maintained van.
Pros and Cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| UK-made — support local manufacturing | Acrylic scratches more easily than glass |
| Good price-to-quality ratio | Not as thermally efficient as the best alternatives |
| Simple installation with clamping frame | Limited colour options (white or black only) |
| Replacement parts available (seals, frames) | Heavier than single-skin alternatives |
| 3-year warranty | Some users report seal shrinkage after 3-4 years |
Verdict
Rating: 8/10
Carver Cascade windows offer excellent value for UK van conversions. They are well-made, easy to install, and priced competitively. The acrylic scratches more easily than glass, but the weight saving (typically 3-4kg per window vs glass) is worth it for most builds.
Recommendation: If you are on a moderate budget and want a reliable UK-branded window, the Carver Cascade is an excellent choice. For premium builds, consider Movera for the longer warranty and slightly better seals. For budget builds, look at used caravan windows or lower-cost imports.
